Travel Tips and Deals

The Oak Bay Beach chauffeur is Downton levels of dreamy.

Family is overrated—hit the road for a New Year's Eve getaway or just enjoy some early January deals:

• Things are warm and bubbly at Harrison Hot Springs east of Vancouver, where the hotel's two-night packages start at $529 (available Jan 1–4—use code CHFAM on the website). A two-night New Year's Eve package starting Dec 30 is $699, including a Gala Ball in the swanky, old-fashioned Copper Room (code NEWYEAR).

• The newly rebuilt Oak Bay Beach Hotel in Victoria hosts a Downton Abbey-themed shindig for the third season premiere on January 6. From valet parking to white-glove service in the dinner theater, it's all about the service. The tickets are $289 (Canadian) per couple, with some proceeds supporting KCTS 9, their (and our) local PBS outlet.

• Provenance hotels, which include the Hotel Murano in Tacoma and the Hotels Lucia, deLuxe and Governor in Portland, are offering New Year's Eve deals. A $329 package at the Murano includes dinner and bubbly, while the Lucia ($249) and Governor ($279) go one better by including a "hangover kit" full of chips, salsa, nuts, and coconut water. Hotel deLuxe's champagne toast and room start at $219.
